Research Activity

The basics of research activity of Department of Histology and Embryology were given at the beginning of its existence. The problems of tissue cultivation and evolutionary morphology were solved.

Prof. MUDr. Jozef Maršala, DrSc. routed scientific research to experimental neuromorphology in 1961, after his assignation to the function of head of department. The staff of department took part in solution of problems connected with neurovascular regulation from 1970. The topic of research work was „Molecular nature of neurovascular relations“. The regenerative ability of nervous tissue after ischemia and the affect of neurovascular substances were studied by internal and external grants. The results were presented within scientific workshops and published in in our republic, as well as abroad.

Nowadays the research activity is arranged in two directions. The experimental transplantation of small intestine is investigated by the methods of light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, expression of cytokines and genes of apoptosis in models of ischemia/reperfusion. Allotranspalntation and autotranspalntation of small intestine in laboratory animals are observed. The transplantation project is solved in partnership with IKEM Prague and Institute of Physiology SAV in Košice, and the departments of our Faculty of Medicine (Department of Anatomy, Department of Pharmacology, Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medical Biochemistry and LABMED, Department of Medical and Clinical Microbiology). The students of medical faculty are involved in these projects.

Together with transplantation project, the neuroprotective effects of some substances in central nervous system after ischemia/reperfusion injury are investigated. The project is solved in partnership with Institute of Neurobiology, Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice.
